GenesisCare – in partnership with the United Kingdom Oncology Nursing Society (UKONS) – has hosted the first-ever joint National Nurse Symposium at the Royal College of Nursing in London.
Over 130 people attended the CPD-accredited event this month, which brought together oncology nursing professionals and multi-disciplinary cancer experts from across the UK for a day dedicated to education, innovation, collaboration, and the advancement of exceptional patient care.
The symposium featured a comprehensive programme focused on equipping nurses with the knowledge, confidence, and practical tools needed to support patients throughout their cancer journey. Attendees explored emerging therapies, evolving clinical practices, communication strategies, symptom and side effect management, psycho-social support, and innovations designed to improve the patient experience.
Opening the event, Dr Sheena Khanduri, Chief Medical Officer at GenesisCare, alongside Julie-Ann Williams, Head of Nursing at GenesisCare, highlighted the critical role oncology nurses play in delivering compassionate, high-quality cancer care.
Chaired by Suriya Kirkpatrick, Assistant Chief Nursing Officer – Genomics and Research & UKONs Board Member, and Dr Russell Burcombe, Consultant Clinical Oncologist & Clinical Director for Breast at GenesisCare, sessions included Innovations in the detection and treatment of breast cancer, nursing priorities in complex radiotherapy for moving tumours, resilience training for nurses, and exercise medicine in cancer care.
The event also provided valuable networking opportunities, enabling nurses and healthcare professionals to connect, collaborate and share best practice with peers from across the oncology community.
This first ever nurse’s symposium marked an important milestone in GenesisCare’s ongoing commitment to supporting oncology nursing education and professional development, while reinforcing the shared ambition of GenesisCare and UKONS to elevate cancer care standards across the UK.
